Perception

Yesterday
Outside my window
The annoying chirping of the birds
Pissed me off
As they woke me from my peaceful sleep
I pulled the comforter over my head
Trying to regain
The dark quiet I lost

Someone didn’t wake up yesterday.
Perception.

Today
I stepped on the scale
The number that I saw made me cringe
Memories of too much obsessing and restricting about food
Filled my mind
Pressure on myself
Trying to please
And be perfect

Someone didn’t wake up today.
Perception.

Tomorrow
If I wake to Nature’s tweeting alarm clock
I will give Thanks
As I snuggle briefly back into my pillow
If I experience the joy of flavors on my tongue
I will give Thanks
Grateful for another chance
Because illness can humble and help one understand

Someone won’t wake up tomorrow.
Perception.
